The North
Cheshire Wind Orchestra (Catherine Tackley), based in the North West of
England, will make their debut performance at the Waterside Arts Centre, Sale,
on Saturday 27th June 2009 with a programme of Russian music.
The end
of the Cold War brought to light a huge repertoire of Russian wind music, much
of has never been performed outside the Soviet Union. Boris Kozhevnikov composed
over 70 works for band - the NCWO will perform the last of his five symphonies
for winds which he dedicated the heroic construction workers of the Baikal-Amur
Railroad. The programme will also include Georgi Salnikov’s quirky Burlesque
and his beautiful Petit Concerto Lyrique, featuring David Benfield on the oboe.
Although
these works were composed in the 1970s and 80s, Kozhevnikov and Salnikov were
indebted to their compatriots of previous generations whose work will also be
included in the concert. Sergey Prokofiev, a composer probably best known for
works such as Peter and the Wolf and Romeo and Juliet, also wrote several
marches for band. The programme is completed with some well-loved classical
works, Kabalevsky’s sparkling Colas Breugnon Overture and Tchaikovsky’s epic
Marche Slav.
The
concert will be conducted by the NCWO"s musical director, Catherine Tackley,
who said: &qout; This is a rare opportunity to hear some really marvellous but
little-known Russian music. All these composers write particularly well for the
wind orchestra, and the concert promises high emotion with soaring melodies,
blazing brass and virtuosic flair.&qout;
Catherine
will be giving a pre-concert talk on the evening of the concert at 6:50pm (free
to ticket holders).
